BIOGRAPHY
Jem Treays is an independent dance artist, choreographer, director and lecturer. He originally came to Wales to work with Diversions (National Dance Company Wales) as a dancer and went on to work with MotionHouse, ManAct, ContreCoeur, Elan, WNO and ENO. In 1995 he formed dance company Treays and Newman with his wife Frances Newman. They received ACW funding and toured the shows “The Nursery Room” and“Gorgeous”. Subsequently he has developed solo work and has toured “Wall” (1999) and”Walkie Talkie” (2002) and duet “Is this It?” (2004) with support from Welsh Independent Dance, ACW, The Place, Clarendon College and RWCMD.
From 1994 to 1997 he worked as director of Diversions Community Dance Productions creating six site specific performances integrating professional and amateur dancers of all ages and abilities. He was movement director for the No Fit State Circus trilogy of site-specific community productions “Prophecy” (1997) and“NowHere” (1998) and “Immortal” (2003). He has close links with National Youth Theatre of Wales having been movement director on Hamlet (2001) and Faust (2002). Jem still performs and most recently collaborated with Roy Campbell Moore, Sue Williams and Chloe Loftus to create Ssh! a dance installation performance at the Dance House supported by The National Dance Company of Wales. Ssh! will tour internationally in 2011. He is a senior lecturer of movement at The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama where he delivers the movement course for the BA (Hons) and MA acting courses.
